Anniston Police Chief: Doctor’s Allegations, Ridiculous

Responding to Dr. Stacy Branch’s exhaustive complaint recently submitted to the City of Anniston, the U.S. Department of Justice, and the Alabama State Attorney General’s office, Anniston Police Chief, John Dryden commented  “I’ve been dealing with this issue since the day it happened.  A complaint has been filed. The investigation has been concluded, and has been turned over to the City Manager for final disposition.”

The Chief was hesitant, and expressed reluctance to speak to The People’s Voice, he said, “because of pending litigation.”

However, Branch stated that to her knowledge, no litigation had been filed in any court against The City Of Anniston at this time.  During a radio interview with Ralph Bradford of Anniston who hosts a Sunday Morning Radio program, “African American’s Talking,” Branch stated that she had hired a Birmingham attorney and paid her a large sum of money to represent her and Martinez; but she took their money and did nothing and as far as she knew, filed nothing.”

Interpreting Dryden’s statement to mean that the conclusion of his investigation was the end of the matter, he was asked if he considered the case closed?

Dryden said, “It never closed.  At this point, I have turned in my report as complete as I can make it.  A complaint of this nature never goes away, it’s always on the books.  It is now under review by the City Manager and the City Council.   There was long period of time before there was anything corresponded through your group.  I disagree with a lot of the allegations Dr. Branch has made in her statement.  There’s a lot of paperwork that I have, that you may not know about.”

“These are serious allegations and the things that she’s alleged will not ever be tolerated in this department.  But there are a lot of allegations in her complaint that are ridiculous!”

“We have a very open forum in this department for complaints.  Anybody can file a complaint.  And if something is done wrong, we take action immediately.  Sometimes, there’s basis, sometimes, there’s not.  But, I’d rather give people the opportunity to vent, or document facts that may not be factual.”

“Now that a complaint has been filed with the City Council, they may want further information, they may agree or disagree with my recommendation, or that of the city manager.  We try to work it together, and do what is best for everybody concerned.

But then we correct these mistakes and try to do what’s best for everybody.   In my estimation, they are not factual.   Some of them are totally ridiculous but we have to respond to them, whether they have basis or not.”

“The beauty of a system, is that if I get a complaint. All we deal with is the truth.  It was addressed immediately and is still being addressed.”

In response to Branch’s offer to meet with Anniston City Officials, Dryden said, “I have no objection to a meeting, but that will be up to the city manager.”

Infuriated by Dryden’s statement Dr. Branch stated, “It is fully documented that the officers knew I was a veterinarian at the beginning of the questioning (my profession was also even placed by them on the complaint), it is documented that they knew and saw my prescription bottles.  It is clear that the search was illegal and they admitted to trying to find something (fishing expedition).  The truth and facts can not be ridiculous.  I am amazed that with all of this and additional documentation at his disposal, he insists on saying the information is not factual.  He knows very well if the arrest were remotely legitimate, the charges would not have been dismissed.

It is extremely sickening to me that we can work all of our lives, never have any criminal history, to still be mistreated due to maliciousness of rogue officers. It is further horrible when an official, fearing liability, blatantly denies plain facts.  Interestingly, he didn’t really address anything about the issue and what he actually feels was so “ridiculous”.  This type of callousness concerning victims of abuse by those under ones employ only adds insult to injury.  Dryden is right about one thing, this issue is not closed.”

  2. The recent experience of the University Professor,
Gates at Cambridge, Mass. in the hands of a police Sargent underscores the longstanding typical unconscious hidden racial biases and profiling of the police towards blacks. The current open and hopefully candid discussions on this issue is long overdue. Had Dr. Stacy Branch been highly connected as Professor Gates, may be this public discussions on what it means to be black in white America would have started sooner than now. Hopefully, Dr. Branch will receive adequate reparation for this ill treatment in Opelika, Alabama to send a clear message to the untransformed that we an in a new era of social consciousness.
